Katsugi Okedo Level 1

20 minutes 0 Enrolled No ratings yet Beginner

Katsugi Okedo translates as ‘shouldering drum’ and although its origins lie in essentially the accompaniment of Buddhist chanting, in more recent times the instrument has become extremely popular in the solo taiko context. Owing to the capacity of the Katsugi Okedo for intricate and complex rhythm-making, it is now the staple of many taiko ensembles.

In this series of three lessons Claudia Wherry introduces the beginner to the basics of Katsugi Okedo. Stance, grips, basic stroke-making and how to strike the back skin are covered in detail in this introduction. By covering these elements, the keen player will be well set for further exploring the instrument and its many musical delights.
